The third GSSE took place in Cyprus 1989, with 675 athletes competing in the Games, an increase in participation of 204% compared to the 1st edition of 1985.
Cyprus dominated the medals table with 26 gold, sending Iceland to second place for the first time in three editions of the Games.
For the first time since the GSSE were established, all eight participating countries went home with at least one gold medal.
